"WHEN ONE TUGS AT A SINGLE THING IN NATURE, HE FINDS IT IS ATTACHED TO THE REST OF THE WORLD." - JOHN MUIR

When I paint on charts and maps I feel connected to the land in which they are detailing, often discovering new lakes, rivers, villages, etc. in my own “backyard'‘ To paint over their beautiful lines and infuse the foreground into the background feels magical. Composition becomes very important when painting on maps. Often there are certain elements in the map or chart that the client wants legible. This can be an exciting and difficult challenge. In the end, I find it so much more rewarding then painting on canvas.

Maps already hold so much information in them. Adding a layer of paint on top of them gives them yet one more element of place that tells a story. Whether its a boat that has crossed a certain body of water only once or a plane that knows the flight paths through Prince William sound by heart- they are all telling a story. A story that I’m happy to share and be apart of.
